Fraudsters often create fake accounts or pages that closely resemble official accounts, tricking users into sharing their personal details, such as usernames, passwords, and even credit card information. With the rising popularity of social media, phishing tactics are evolving and increasingly targeting users who may not be vigilant.

These fraudsters, or "phishers," have become more sophisticated, often replicating official profiles so closely that they even use similar usernames and profile photos. If users aren't careful, anyone can fall victim. Therefore, it’s essential for social media users to recognize common phishing tactics in order to avoid falling into these traps.

2. Common Phishing Techniques on Social Media

Social media phishing often appears in the form of direct messages (DMs), comments on posts, or even ads on your timeline. A popular phishing method is sending DMs that seem to come from a friend or official account. These messages usually contain links urging the user to “verify their account” or “claim a prize.” If the user clicks, they’re taken to a fake site designed by the phisher to capture their information.

Aside from DMs, another common technique is fake accounts or pages promoting tempting offers. For instance, fake accounts of well-known brands might run "giveaways" or huge discounts, but their real aim is to collect users' personal data. Be cautious of accounts that offer things that sound too good to be true.

3. How to Avoid Phishing on Social Media

The first step to avoid phishing is always to verify the account or page before sharing any personal information. Make sure the account has a blue checkmark (verified), especially if it’s associated with a brand or organization. Don't immediately trust DMs or comments directing you to click on a link. It’s better to search for the information on official sources or visit the website directly.

Moreover, activate security settings on your social media accounts, like two-factor authentication. This feature adds a layer of security, so even if a phisher manages to steal your login data, they won’t be able to access your account without a verification code. Lastly, always be wary of suspicious offers or messages, and don't easily trust unfamiliar accounts or pages.
